The Key To Writing A Strong Descriptive Essay On A Place

This type of essay aims to describe a person, place, experience, emotion, object with a lot of detail. For this essay specifically you want to focus exclusively on describing a place. The main object of a descriptive essay is to describe a place there are different parts of speech that can help you do this

Use your Five Senses

The detail in the essay should appeal to the senses of the reader sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. You want to paint a picture with your words so that your reader can see or understand your topic. Don’t use vague words like good or great, instead use descriptive, sensory words as a way to inform your audience about the subject. Some of these sensory details would include the smell in the air, the sounds that are surrounding the situation, the sights, the feeling of the objects around you or how something tasted.

Figurative Language

By using different types of speech such as figurative language including similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and symbols. Similes and metaphor are both statements that compare two things. With a simile the writer uses words “like” or “as” while comparing the two items. A metaphor compares the two with an implication rather than using a specific word for the comparison. Personification is when you give human-like characteristics to an inanimate object. A hyperbole uses statements of over-exaggeration. Onomatopoeia are words that are read like the sound they make (ex. Buzz, swoosh, hum). Lastly a symbol is assigning meaning to an object (ex. American Flag)

Go to the Place

If you actually have the opportunity to revisit the place you want to describe then it will give the audience a better picture in their head. By actually being at the place you are describing you can add in some of the extra details to bring the reader to that place with you. An interesting exercise you can try in order to test this is by creating an outline of your description from memory and then creating another outline while you’re actually in the place you’re describing. The amount of detail you leave out from trying to write from memory are astounding. It might not always be reasonable to revisit the area, whether it be another country or an unreachable place. In these types of case it’s better to research or be as descriptive with your memory as you possibly can.
